In earlier days, it was scandalous for a woman to step foot out of the house not wearing pantyhose. These days, fashion has changed this etiquette rule so much that to see anyone in pantyhose, no matter what the occasion, is more of a rarity than a societal norm. Where do pantyhose fit in to proper wedding etiquette, though? Weddings are full of tradition and fashion standards. Does the age old rule of wearing pantyhose still apply there?
The simple answer is: no, following correct wedding etiquette does not require you to wear pantyhose to a wedding. However, if you do choose to wear them, follow these tips below so you do not date your look!
- Never wear pantyhose with open toe shoes. Even if the pantyhose are advertised as a type with an “invisible” seam around the toes, they are not invisible and simply look tacky. If you look hard enough, you can find types of pantyhose that fit in a way that leave your toes stocking free, but, these will only work with peep toe shoes.
- If attending a winter wedding, pantyhose can help complete the “polished” look cold weather weddings usually call for; and they can help keep you warm!
- Do not be afraid to experiment with some of the great new colors, textures and patterns out there! If you have a little black dress, pair it with some patterned tights or a sheer purple or blue. Be adventurous! However, if your dress is already a stand out color or is very busy, keep the pantyhose neutral.
- A word of warning: if you’re drinking at the wedding, make sure you do not tuck your dress into your pantyhose when you finish using the bathroom. I have seen this at every single wedding I have ever been to!
If you are leaning towards wearing pantyhose because your legs are so white you risk being mistaken for the bride’s dress, pantyhose are not your only option. Either fake and bake at a tanning salon, spray tan or use tanning lotion. Just make sure you test your new look out a few weeks beforehand so you don’t go from pure white to oompa loompa!
